Key Screens

Here is the new work flow I proposed- to add another section for Podcasts and do some changes in the podcast player as well.

New Work Flow

If we do the math, the user is bombarded with so much information that he is not taken to the optimized results. In this chaos the user retention rate especially for the podcast audience reduces.

Current Work Flow

So, back to users and goals, how to help them find the most personalized content but meanwhile make sure they are still relevant and the app is easy to use?

Ideation

Users and their Goals

Spotify has a wide range of users from all over the world. Obviously there is no perfect design for every single one of them. I did some secondary research in user demographic data of Spotify. And then I talked with several users to figure our their thoughts.

I coded all the data on post-its and did an affinity map to cluster ideas and gather insights.

These questions helped me shape my research activity:

Q1) Who uses Spotify?

With around 252M active users almost every other person uses or has used this platform. The age range can vary from 10 year olds to almost 40 year old individuals majorly dominating the market.

Q2) What is the platform most used for?

The mobile app is used more as compared to the web player. It is also used more for music listening than anything else.

Q3) What are all the features that Spotify has?

Excluding the music download that is only available for premium users, Spotify offers music streaming, podcast streaming, creating and discovering playlists and artists.

Q4) What are the user goals?

Being able to find everything related to audio on one platform, which helps to use a single platform rather than many for different features.

User Research

The most important part of a design is to understand who we are designing for. We should know their technical prowess as well as their goals.

My Process

Problem Statement

Taking the current mobile app of spotify, a few pain points regarding the discoverability of podcasts should be solved. The goal for this initiative is to determine the best way moving forward in that direction, and to provide Spotify with a prototype of the feature that can be integrated seamlessly within the app.

Spotify Redesign

Starting with a project in my third year about music recommendation systems made me think about the widely loved Spotify app. As a streaming music service, Spotify is one of the leaders in the industry and it wants to stay that way. They want to improve engagement and retention in the app especially in the podcast section of the app. In order to do that, they want to expand on their social capabilities.

Interaction and Prototype

What if we show users a different tab for podcasts? According to my research, users are bothered the most by no interesting podcasts and the chaos in the "my library tab". If we let them filter these out when searching, we could make sure that users could make informed decisions about their music and podcasts choices.
