Direct Competitors

Merging Gen Z's digital landscape with a shared passion for media, our team aimed to redefine short-form content streaming for shrinking attention spans.

The vision was to enhance engagement, establish a competitive edge, and foster loyalty through an interactive streaming experience, focusing on anime and leveraging the otaku community's love for influencing storylines.

Initial research emphasized the importance of factors like mood, content length, cast, creators, and subscriptions in the content consumption journey.

Leveraging this insight, we shifted our project focus to revolutionize content selection, aiming to simplify and personalize the discovery process.

Our mission: transform the 'content hunt' into an enjoyable journey with quick, tailored recommendations. The goal was to provide users with tools to navigate vast content catalogs and discover their perfect match—thus, Slate was born.

Our competitive analysis focused on platforms in the same space as Slate. We compared 10 relevant products, with key competitors being Reelgood, JustWatch, TasteDive, Playpilot, and Roku Channel. While major streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc., aren't direct competitors, their in-built recommendation systems indirectly influence content choices, contributing to the broader ecosystem.

We conducted a totality of 2 user surveys and 10 user interviews. There were 14 survey participants that ranged from the ages of 18-25, with 54% identifying as female, and 46% as male. The students represented a variety of majors, including Arts (20%), Sciences (15%), Business (25%), Engineering (40%).

We asked our interviewees around 15 questions and made sure each session lasted a maximum of 30 minutes. The interview questions were segmented into sections based on streaming habits, experiences with recommendation algorithms, and frustrations with their current content consumption habits.

We prioritized obtaining detailed, contextual data by directly engaging with our target audience.

This involved focusing on demographic details and the entire user journey, including the contemplative phase, platform interaction, and viewing experience.

Emphasizing qualitative data in interviews, we condensed findings into actionable insights, represented visually through an Affinity Diagram for more effective analysis.

We did more research and made journey maps for the TV as well as Mobile Flow. We got many insights and were finally ready to get into the implementation.

A few of the sketches we made are shown below:
